Traffic Sign Inventory

Traffic Sign Inventory

While the most common traffic sign inventories harnesses photogrammetry technology, RAS can also conduct a terrestrial LiDAR survey if desired by an agency. RAS can capture LiDAR data concurrently with our fleet of RAC that are equipped with the LCMS-2 for pavement inspections or independently with mobile LiDAR collection vehicles. Utilizing LiDAR vehicles, RAS collected 5,000 miles for the City of Austin’s traffic sign inventory and collected two corridors for Salt Lake City, UT. The RAS team typically recommends mobile LiDAR data collection for project-level use cases, with a focus on leveraging the data to support additional design and survey-grade applications.

The RAS team has managed large-scale traffic sign surveys on over 100,000 miles of roadways and inventoried over 1,000,000 signs for agencies across the Country. RAS conducts traffic sign inventories with automated data collection vehicles that capture high-definition ROW imagery simultaneously with pavement condition data collection. RAS can extract nearly any identifiable feature with the most common attribution consisting of the following: Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Device (MUTCD) sign type, location, condition (Good, Fair, Poor), post type, and imagery with geo-referenced information being delivered via an Esri geodatabase.

Sign Retroreflectivity Studies

Traffic fatality rates during the night are almost 3 times higher than daytime fatality rates with several factors contributing to this including driver fatigue, alcohol, and reduced roadway visibility at night. The value of nighttime visibility of traffic control devices as our population ages is of utmost importance. As of 2020, about one-fifth of the U.S. population is 65 years of age or older. In 1990 there were 10.7 million drivers over age 70 in the country and in 2006 that number had increased to 20.6 million. In general, older individuals have declining vision and slower reaction times. Signs that are easier to see and read at night can help older drivers retain their freedom of mobility and remain independent. RAS understands that municipalities must maintain safe roadways for the road-users and be aware that the road-user demographics are changing. The underlying issue behind today’s sign retro reflectivity rating is maintaining the signs for all road-users, including this growing demographic.

RAS regularly provides an Agency with a FHWA approved Visual Nighttime Inspection Method that records in the sign database whether the inventoried signs meet the minimum retroreflectivity guidelines in the MUTCD.
